Stay safe when renting or buying
Most property fraud can be avoided with a few simple checks.
Never pay before inspecting
Don't pay an inspection fee, deposit or rent before you've seen the property and met the agent or owner in person.
Check the title
Ask for the C of O, Governor's Consent, Deed of Assignment or Survey Plan. Prefer listings with the Verified badge, and do your own search at the Lands Registry for purchases.
Pay into business accounts
Pay to a registered company or the owner's account, never to a third party. Always get a receipt.
Beware of 'omo onile' and multiple sales
For land, confirm the family or community that sold it has authority, and check the land isn't under government acquisition.
Use a lawyer for purchases
A property lawyer should review the documents and prepare the Deed of Assignment.
